Walking Madrid
When to walk
Spring — March through May brings warm days and outdoor terraza season. The city blooms — Retiro Park fills with picnickers and the light lasts until 9pm.
Summer — Hot. Locals flee to the coast, but the city rewards those who stay — fewer crowds, late sunsets, and rooftop bars that come alive after midnight.
Autumn — September and October are arguably the best months. The heat breaks, the chestnuts roast on Gran Vía, and the city finds its rhythm again.
Winter — Cold but clear. Christmas lights on Gran Vía are worth the trip alone. Fewer tourists, warmer tapas bars, and the Prado practically to yourself.
