Sacromonte is built into the hillside above the Darro river. The Roma community carved homes into the soft rock centuries ago — whitewashed caves with chimneys poking through the earth above. From the outside, the hill looks like scrubland. Inside, the caves are cool, quiet, and surprisingly spacious.
This walk climbs through the neighborhood, passing the cave museum, flamenco venues, and the cactus-lined paths that connect upper and lower Sacromonte. It tells the story of a community that has been romanticized, marginalized, and celebrated in roughly equal measure.

Best time
Late afternoon into evening. The cave venues start their shows after dark.

From Plaza Nueva, follow Carrera del Darro east and turn uphill at Camino del Sacromonte.

40 minutes. The path is uphill throughout — pace yourself.
Footwear
Dirt paths and uneven stone. Sturdy shoes with grip required — sandals are a mistake.
